What is the long/short ratio?

The long/short ratio shows how much of the market's accounts (or positions) are long and how much are short. Binance publishes separate ratios for all accounts and for the largest accounts.

Which ratios exist?

The ratio for all accounts is calculated by number of accounts. The ratio for the largest accounts is weighted by position size. The two can diverge: retail can be piled into longs while large accounts are short.

How should it be read?

A long share far above 50% shows the long side is crowded. This is sometimes read as risk of a reversal, sometimes as trend continuation; on its own it doesn't determine direction.

Together with funding

Funding shows how much the crowd is paying; the long/short ratio shows which side it is on. When both point the same way the crowding is clearer.

Example

If 70% of BTC accounts are long while the largest accounts' position share is around 50%, retail is positioned differently from the large accounts; what that does to price is unknown.

Where do you see it in KARDVANE?

The Pro terminal shows an 'accounts long ratio' panel below each coin's chart and the large accounts' long share in the coin file.

FAQ

Does the long/short ratio show direction?

No. It shows how the crowd is positioned; on its own it isn't a reliable direction indicator.
